The University of Virginia is currently seeking an IT-Assistive Technology Specialist (AT Specialist) to work with the Student Disability Access Center (SDAC). SDAC is the University s designated access agency for students with disabilities, providing services to two groups of students those who have been previously diagnosed with a disability and those who have never been diagnosed, but find themselves struggling academically, and seek advice and support to address their difficulties.
The AT Specialist will be responsible for coordinating all aspects of assistive technology implemented and deployed through SDAC and serve as the subject matter expert for SDAC in matters relating to assistive technology, technology accessibility, and technology accessibility standards.
- The successful candidate will recommend, evaluate, install and maintain assistive technology adopted by SDAC designated as preferred AT accommodations and conduct research for IT specific solutions at the request of the SDAC team.
- The successful candidate will be expected to assist students with the installation and use of the assistive technologies provided for them as an accommodation.
In addition, and working with the SDAC team, this person will be responsible for the development and maintenance of online materials providing guidance and instruction for the use of these technologies. In cooperation with other SDAC team members, the successful candidate will provide direct support for the creation of accessible course materials, including the creation of Braille and tactile graphics documents as well as captioning services for video, audio materials and in-person events.
Description The AT Specialist will work within SDAC to provide support and direct services to students with disabilities in the use of assistive or adaptive technology, optimizing inclusion and access to the academic University experience. In addition to the information provided in the position summary, duties and responsibilities may Include, but are not limited to the following Together with SDAC team members, conduct evaluations to determine appropriate IT related accommodations and provide training on these assistive technologies to support the academic experience.
Collaborate with faculty to identify opportunities for the provision of accessible curricula and alternatively formatted materials. Troubleshoot assistive technology problems that arise due to specific technology compatibility Issues. Research and recommend accessible technology purchases for students with disabilities. Monitor and maintain equipmentsoftware installations, keeping an accurate accounting of assigned licenses, subscriptions and hardware inventory.
Provide training to the University community on both disability-specific technology as well as best practices in digital accessibility. Provide IT-related support for the SDAC Team and participate in the UVA-ITS sponsored Local Support Partner (LSP) program. Consult and work in partnership with the University ITS and Student Health IT services on network compatibility, security issues, software distribution, licensing opportunities, and other aspects of University IT related responsibilities. Preferred Qualifications Possess a broad understanding of the Civil rights laws such as the Americans with Disabilities Act as Amended, Section 504 and 508 of the Rehabilitation Act, the ADAA and other applicable laws, and their application at the post-secondary level. Understand the implications of the WCAG and Section 508 digital accessibility standards. Have a working knowledge of common assistive technologies such as text to speech and speech to text solutions, reading and writing assistance software, screen-reader systems, audio books, captioning and transcription, adaptive devices, braille equipment, high-speed scanners, note taking software, along with the theories, principles, and practices guiding the use of these tools.
Understand the practices involved with document remediation and conversion, particularly PDF conversion and alternative text best practices. Have a working knowledge of the Windows, MacOS, iOS and Android operating systems. Value organizational diversity treat others with respect promote cooperation effectively manage relationships. Education and Related Experience Required education Bachelor s degree in a technology-related field or four years of experience as a substitute, or an Associate s degree and two years of experience.
Minimum of three years in an information technology related area, preferably working directly with assistive andor adaptive technologies. IAAP Certified Professional in Accessibility Core Competencies (CPACC) not required but preferred. Preference will be given to applications received by October 16, 2020. The University will perform background, health and drug checks on all new hires to the Department of Student Health prior to employment.
